Configuration Management

Definition

(Context: Project Management)


A technical and management process for establishing and maintaining consistency of a product's functional and physical attributes with its requirements, design, and operational information throughout its life. The major CM functions are Management and Planning; Configuration Identification; Configuration Change Management; Configuration Status Accounting; and Configuration Verification and Audit.

(Context: Information Systems Security)

A technical and management process for establishing and maintaining consistency of a product's functional and physical attributes with its requirements, design, and operational information throughout its life. The CM functions are Configuration Management Planning and Management; Configuration Identification; Configuration Change Management; Configuration Status Accounting; and Configuration Verification and Audit.

A formal discipline that provides project team members and customers with the methods and tools that are used to identify the product developed, establish baselines, control changes to these baselines, record and track status, and audit the product.
