Health Information Technology Standards Advisory Committee Releases Annual Report
The Virginia Health Information Technology Standards Advisory Committee (HITSAC) has released its annual report.
The report details the committee's work in 2013 and summarizes work accomplished in prior years. Milestones for 2013 include offering guidance for:
ConnectVirginia's on-boarding of the first node onto the statewide health information exchange
Commonwealth of Virginia's enterprise information architecture strategy
The Virginia Information Technologies Agency's (VITA) compliance plan for data standards
Enterprise architecture implemented under the electronic Health and Human Resources (eHHR) Program
Emerging trends in health information technology (IT) standards and interoperability, including genomics, genetic research and personalized medicine
HITSAC was created by the 2009 General Assembly and advises the Virginia Information Technology Advisory Council (ITAC), secretaries of technology and health and human resources, and chief information officer (CIO) of the commonwealth on the utilization of nationally recognized IT technical and data standards for health systems and software. HITSAC is supported by the VITA commonwealth data governance team.
Since its formation, HITSAC has worked on the adoption of 127 health IT standards, including data, data exchange, vocabulary, messaging and technology standards, and implementation guides.
Current HITSAC members are: Inova Health System Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Dr. Marshall Ruffin, chairman; Virginia Department of Health Research and Quality Chief Medical Officer Dr. Sallie S. Cook; University of Virginia Departments of Public Health Sciences and Pathology Associate Professor and Director of Clinical Informatics Dr. James H. Harrison; Virginia Commonwealth University Health System Vice President and Chief Information Officer Rich Pollack; and Health Level 7 Chief Technology Officer John Quinn.
