General Packet Radio Services (GPRS)
(Context: )
Definition
A packet-based wireless communication service that promises data rates from 56 up to 114 Kbps and continuous connection to the Internet for mobile phone and computer users. The data rates will allow users to take part in video conferences and interact with multimedia Web sites and similar applications using mobile handheld devices as well as notebook computers. GPRS is based on Global System for Mobile (GSM) communication and will complement existing services such as circuit-switched cellular phone connections and the Short Message Service (SMS). In theory, GPRS packet-based service should cost users less than circuit-switched services since communication channels are being used on a shared- use, as-packets-are-needed basis rather than dedicated only to one user at a time. It should also be easier to make applications available to mobile users because the faster data rate means that middleware currently needed to adapt applications to the slower speed of wireless systems will no longer be needed. As GPRS becomes available, mobile users of a virtual private network (VPN) will be able to access the private network continuously rather than through a dial-up connection. GPRS will also complement Bluetooth, a standard for replacing wired connections between devices with wireless radio connections. In addition to the Internet Protocol (IP), GPRS supports X.25, a packet-based protocol that is used mainly in Europe. GPRS is an evolutionary step toward Enhanced Data GSM Environment (EDGE) and Universal Mobile Telephone Service (UMTS).

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI)
(Context: Software)
Definition
TechRepublic defines generative AI as a subfield of artificial intelligence in which computer algorithms are used to generate outputs that resemble human-created content, be it text, images, graphics, music, computer code or otherwise. Generative AI is the type of AI that has been the area where the most significant and publicized progress has been made recently. In the case of ChatGPT, generative AI is classified as a model that can generate narrative content in response to a prompt. A prompt is either a question or reference to a subject the user is interested in finding information on. Crafting a prompt which returns the most efficient set of results requires some testing and configuring from the user. Some speculations indicate prompt engineering will be incorporated into job duties when generative AI becomes more pervasive in the workplace. Tools like ChatGPT and DALL-E (a tool that generates art) have the potential to change the way people access information. The full breadth of that change is still being debated, however the initial areas where this technology is being applied is to search and analyze online data including both public data and private enterprise data

Geodiversity
(Context: Data Center Facility, Hardware, Technology Management)
Definition
Short for geographic diversity — in the context of data centers refers to the distance between two or more facilities. Recommended distance is 400+ miles; distances of 100-400 miles are allowable under certain circumstances.

Geographic Information System (GIS)
(Context: )
Definition
Captures, stores, analyzes, manages, and presents data that is linked to location. Technically, a GIS is a system that includes mapping software and its application to remote sensing, land surveying, aerial photography, mathematics, photogrammetry, geography, and tools that can be implemented with GIS software. Still, many refer to "geographic information system" as GIS even though it doesn't cover all tools connected to the topology.

Global Directory Services (GDS)
(Context: )
Definition
Such as DNS and GDS (X.500), grew out of the computer industry's need to reference objects in distributed networks across an entire enterprise and worldwide.
Goods
(Context: )
Definition
Material, equipment, supplies, printing, and automated data processing hardware and software (Code of Virginia, §2.2-4301).
Governance
(Context: )
Definition
The development and management of consistent, cohesive policies, processes, and decision-rights for a given area of responsibility.
Government Database
(Context: )
Definition
For the purposes of this document, the term government database includes both databases that contain COV data and data communications that transport COV data. This definition applies irrespective of whether the COV information is in a physical database structure maintained by COV or a third-party provider. However, this definition does not include databases within Agencies that have been determined by the Agencies themselves to be non-governmental. See also Database and Data Communications.
Government to Customer (G2C)
(Context: )
Definition
Refers to a business process involving electronic interaction of government with citizens.
Grade
(Context: )
Definition
A category or rank used to distinguish items that have the same functional use (e.g., "hammer") but do not share the same requirements for quality (e.g., different hammers may need to withstand different amounts of force.)

Grant
(Context: )
Definition
Funds given to Commonwealth agencies by foundations, businesses, governments, or individuals.
Grant Notification

(Context: )
Definition
- The European standards group for wireless connectivity
- Digital cellular telephone standard developed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute's (ETSI) Groupe Spécial Mobile. Also used in some Middle Eastern countries and parts of Australia. The frequencies allocated to the service are divided into 200-kHz blocks, each of which supports eight simultaneous users (by using a form of TDMA that lets a handset transmit a few bytes of data or digitized voice, 217 times per second).
