Applications open for VITA’s 2026 internship program

It's time for college students to make summer plans. And for those students who want to get a jump on exploring career opportunities, it's time to apply for a VITA summer internship.
VITA is now accepting applications for the information technology agency's 2026 internship program. Interns will be immersed in nine weeks of real-world experience designed to unlock their potential and support their professional growth. College students enrolled in a two-year, four-year or graduate-level degree program (including students graduating in May 2026) are eligible for VITA internships. Students with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Applications are due Feb. 25.
The VITA internship program benefits both students and our team. Interns bring energy, fresh perspectives and new ideas that reinvigorate the agency. To maximize impact, this year's program has been expanded from 19 to 21 positions.
Positions are available in various business roles, including:
- Administration
- Communications
- Legislative services
- Security and risk management
- Supply chain management
- Data engineering and analytics
- Finance
What to expect
VITA's internship program consistently receives excellent feedback from participants. In 2025, of the interns with prior internship experience, 75% rated VITA’s internship program as better than other programs they experienced.
VITA interns get hands-on experience in a state agency office environment, working alongside industry leaders and seasoned professionals. Interns will make an impact by contributing to meaningful projects that help shape the future of the Commonwealth.
Students have the opportunity to build connections that could open doors and kick-start their career. Former VITA interns have gone on to secure positions in various fields, and some have been offered positions at VITA. Since 2023, 18 former interns have joined VITA as employees.
Supporting the Commonwealth's workforce
Top-level Virginia leadership is focused on developing, attracting and retaining top talent in the Commonwealth. In her Jan. 19 address to the General Assembly, Gov. Abigail Spanberger named paid internships as one way the Commonwealth can invest in our workforce.
VITA is committed to supporting the Commonwealth's next generation of talent by offering a high-quality, paid internship opportunity that benefits students, employees and the state as a whole.
VITA internship applications are due Feb. 25. All applications must be submitted through the Virginia Jobs website.
