Service Lead: Arthur Midgette Arthur.Midgette@vita.virginia.gov (Mainframe Services) and Michael Shaffer Mike.Shaffer@vita.virginia.gov (Server/Storage Services)

The mainframe and server service offering consists of mainframe services as well as server and storage offerings. These services are provided through the IT infrastructure program.

Mainframe services are hosted at the supplier's site through CESC. Server/Storage Services are hosted internally at the Commonwealth Enterprise Solutions Center (CESC), the Commonwealth of Virginia (COV) disaster recovery (DR) location. Server/Storage services can be hosted externally at a customer's site.

Services within the offering:

IBM Mainframe Processing - z/OS
VITA provides an IBM z/OS mainframe system to users. Currently supporting multiple agencies with customers throughout the Commonwealth, the mainframe is a highly available and reliable solution for applications. VITA mainframe provides data replication to a disaster recovery site. Aside for unique user specific software or utilities that the agency would be responsible for, billing items consist of Storage (virtual tape or DASD), CPU seconds/hours, and CPU Software Services (CPU hours). See the product description for additional details.

Enhanced Server Operating System Security (ESOSS)
Enhanced server operating system security service provides protection of highly sensitive systems in a shared environment and to inspect traffic when encryption is being used on agency servers. ESOSS is generally used to secure operating systems past their service support. See the product description for additional details.

Enhanced Database Security (EDS)
Enhanced database security is provided for specific database instances. The EDS software does not modify the database and occupies up to 3% of CPU core. See the product description for additional details. EDS is generally used to secure databases past their service support. See the product description for additional details.

Enterprise Application Publishing Service (EAPS)
The enterprise application publishing service (EAPS) enables customers to utilize a shared Citrix infrastructure in order to publish applications present a virtual desktop or application to a user, regardless of location. See the product description for additional details.

Physical Server
Operating systems offered are Windows Server, Unix  and Linux-Redhat in the supplier's standard build. Options consist of small 1-2 CPUs, medium 3-4 CPUs, large 5-6 CPUs, and enterprise over six (6) CPUs. Customers indicate the amount of DASD (hard drive or solid-state memory), SAN storage by tier and amount, random access memory (RAM), central processing units (CPUs), and number of cores per CPU cores required. SAN storage Tiers 1-3 and disaster recovery (DR) offerings are available. A VITA enterprise architecture (EA) physical server exception is required to order and deploy physical servers. See the product description for additional details.

Virtual Server
Operating systems offered are Windows Server and Linux-Redhat server instances in the supplier's standard build. Server instance options consist of small 1-2 CPUs, medium 3-4 CPUs, large 5-6 CPUs, and enterprise over 6 CPUs up to 32 GB virtual random access memory (vRAM). SAN storage Tiers 1-3 and disaster recovery (DR) offerings are available. VITA Enterprise Architecture (EA) physical server exception is not required for virtual servers. See the product description for additional details.

Storage - Direct Attached Storage Device (DASD)
DASD is installed memory on physical servers or network accessible storage (NAS) units. DASD can be internal at CESC, the COV disaster recovery location or external located at a customer site. Performance determined by attachment type: small computer system interface (SCSI), serial attached SCSI (SAS), solid-state drive (SSD), etc. DASD billed by the actual amount mounted and backed up by a standard backup process. DASD storage with back up and without back up offered. A VITA enterprise architecture (EA) physical server exception may be required to upgrade existing physical servers with additional DASD.  See the product description for additional details.

Storage - Tier 1
Highly available scalable performance storage with end-to-end redundancy and remote administration. Designed to support latency-sensitive applications. Tier 1 storage is only available internally at CESC and replicated to the COV disaster recovery location with back up. See the product description for additional details.

Storage - Tier 2
Highly available scalable performance storage with end-to-end redundancy and remote administration. Tier 2 storage is available internally at CESC, the COV disaster recovery location and external locations at customer site. Tier 2 storage with back up and without back up are offered. See the product description for additional details.

Storage - Tier 3
Provided as a low-cost, rarely-accessed data repository in support of a business or regulatory need, but without the availability or backup-restoral capability as production level data. Tier 3 storage is not designed to support latency-sensitive applications such as online transaction processing. See the product description for additional details.
