The Large File Transfer (LFT) is a web based application that allows users to send and receive large files that are typically blocked due to size by e-mail systems. The service is available to all COV users with a COV mailbox and provides:

  • Reliable delivery with checkpoint restart and integrity check
  • Web browser integration

Files remain available for 14 days.

Allowable file types with the new version:

  • .zip
  • .pdf

Anyone with a COV e-mail account can login to the Large File Transfer (LFT) application at and send large (<= 5 GB) .zip or .pdf file(s) to anyone with an e-mail address.

COV LFT users can create a temporary LFT account for anyone without a COV e-mail address with the following steps:

  • Once logged in, select the 'Invite other' option
  • Temporary LFT accounts are valid for 6 months
  • Public access has been removed


A valid email address is required for use.

How to Order

Effective 12/15/18, this service can be ordered from the VITA Service Catalog in the new VITA Service Portal. To submit your request:

  • Customers who have Commonwealth of Virginia (COV) accounts (including executive branch agencies) should access the VITA Service Catalog via the VITA Service Portal to place service requests using the automated form provided in the catalog.
  • Customers who do not have COV accounts (including some local government customers) or customers who are unable to gain access to the portal may order the service by sending an e-mail to the VITA Customer Care Center (VCCC) services desk at Please include the following information:
    • The words "Service request" in the "Subject" line
    • The name of the service being ordered
    • The quantity desired (if applicable)
    • Any other information you deem relevant

If you are uncertain as to whether you have a COV account, start by trying to access the VITA Service Portal. If you are unable to do so, then use the email-to-the-VCCC method.

The LFT provides an easy way for Agencies to send large files to each other and to non-COV email addresses.

All files are automatically removed from the system after 14 days.

The files can be downloaded as many times as necessary before they are permanently removed from the system within 14 days of being sent.

This service will allow users to send large files without the need to place the file on a thumb drive or cd and physically take or send the file to another user. This saves resource time and increases productivity.

Anyone that has access to the temporary link AND the PIN can download the file from the system within 14 days of being sent. The sender is notified when the user(s) download the file(s).

Windows, select File Explorer, select the file to upload and right click, select send to, select compression (ZIP), which creates a new file. In the LFT, browse File Explorer for zip file and select the file.
