Storage Services are those necessary to support applications and their use of data volumes. Attached Storage Device (DASD) is installed memory on physical servers or network accessible storage (NAS) units. DASD can be internal at CESC, the CoV disaster recovery location or external at a customer site.

DASD is (Direct Attached Storage Device) internal or external storage hard disk drive (HDD) or solid state drive (SSD) mounted to a physical server located at CESC/Disaster Recovery location or customer site.

  • Performance determined by attachment type (e.g., SCSI, SAS, SSD etc.).
  • Redundancy not always possible, typically not shared with other systems
  • Limited or no remote automation
  • Provisioning changes require downtime and manual effort.
  • DASD is billed by actual amount, i.e. 4GB drive equals 4GB
  • Fees include labor and setup costs to install and verify DASD installation
  • DASD recurring fees are billed by the full amount of DASD storage installed.
  • Data is not backed up

A VITA Enterprise Architecture (EA) physical server exception may be required to order and deploy additional DASD to existing physical servers.  Does not apply to NAS. Please contact the CAM for additional information regarding the physical server exception process.

Continued use of physical servers may not meet Executive Order 19 application virtualization policy and requirements as described in Cloud-Based Hosting Services IT Solutions Policy_EA300-01, February 04, 2019.  VITA enterprise architecture (EA) guidelines, forms, and directives are available at

How to Order

Effective 12/15/18, this service can be ordered from the VITA Service Catalog in the new VITA Service Portal. To submit your request:

  • Customers who have Commonwealth of Virginia (COV) accounts (including executive branch agencies) should access the VITA Service Catalog via the VITA Service Portal to place service requests using the automated form provided in the catalog.
  • Customers who do not have COV accounts (including some local government customers) or customers who are unable to gain access to the portal may order the service by sending an e-mail to the VITA Customer Care Center (VCCC) services desk at Please include the following information:
    • The words "Service request" in the "Subject" line
    • The name of the service being ordered
    • The quantity desired (if applicable)
    • Any other information you deem relevant

If you are uncertain as to whether you have a COV account, start by trying to access the VITA Service Portal. If you are unable to do so, then use the email-to-the-VCCC method.
