IT Infrastructure Partnership

May 2009 Progress Update

In May, the IT Infrastructure Partnership between VITA and Northrop Grumman continues to focus on transforming the Commonwealth’s IT infrastructure so that agencies can begin benefiting from the new services and technology, getting the tools in place to accurately measure those services and closing out the physical asset inventory effort.

To date, 128 service level measures are in place and the ITP is working to stand up the other 68 as quickly as possible. Initial measures are for the entire enterprise, however, VITA and Northrop Grumman also hope to make a select number of agency specific SLAs available to larger customers at the end of May. These measures will include incident management (break fix data), server availability and network performance data. The goal is to eventually make the data available to all customers in an online dashboard. Available enterprise-wide data is posted on the VITA Web site.

Efforts to catalogue the physical asset Inventory also are nearly complete. Assets have been counted at all agencies and the ITP is waiting on just a few agencies to sign off on their inventory reports and accompanying changes to billing. The next step will be to conduct an inventory of non-physical assets, including printers, data ports, and that sort of information.

Transformation Update

Technology upgrades also continue, with the following progress to date:

  • PC refresh: More than 34,000 desktops, laptops and tablets have been replaced across the Commonwealth. All agencies are either “in progress” (15 agencies) or completed (72 agencies). Agencies currently being refreshed include the departments of Accounts, Health and Human Resources, Medical Assistance, Mines, Minerals and Energy, Motor Vehicles, Labor and Industry, Social Services and Transportation.
  • Network: To date a total of 1,627 sites agency sites have migrated to the new centrally managed network. The benefits allow for enhanced application security and interoperability.
  • Messaging: Twelve agencies with approximately 12,900 users have been migrated to enterprise e-mail and are benefiting from easier file sharing and better e-mail security. Thirty agencies are in progress.
  • Help desk: Seventy-nine agencies with approximately 46,500 users now are calling the central VITA help desk. The Virginia Employment Commission (VEC) is currently underway.
