GIS Strategic Plan
Final document as of March 19, 2015
Road Centerline Data Standard
The Virginia Road Centerline Standard Workgroup will create and document a formal Road Centerline geospatial data standard that meets the broad needs of the commonwealth. It should involve important stakeholders such as the Virginia Department of Transportation, state agencies, and all local governments who maintain 9-1-1 addressing and their private sector supporters.

2014 VGIN Strategic Plan Town Hall Meetings
VGIN is pleased to announce our schedule for a series of Town Hall style meetings for the update to the five Year GIS Strategic Plan for 2015-2020. Many of you may recall the process we used in 2009 to gather stakeholder input, which were primarily these kinds of regional meetings. The process of listening to your input was so helpful and valuable to us that we are repeating a similar approach for the update.
This will be an opportunity for you to lend your voice to the crafting of the strategic direction of GIS in the commonwealth. I hope you will be able to participate by joining one of the meetings. If not, we will also have a statewide webinar and an
online survey to fill in the gaps. Note: a follow up announcement will be made with a registration link so we can get a count of those planning to attend.

2012 State Agency GIS User Survey
In the Summer of 2012 VGIN performed a survey of Commonwealth Agencies and Bodies about their use of GIS and mapping technologies. Results were presented at the 2012 Virginia GIS Conference and are available here as well.
2011 Locality GIS Survey
In the fall of 2011 VGIN sent out a Locality GIS Baseline Survey to gather information about the GIS capabilities and use of GIS services by Virginia’s localities. These survey results will be a valuable tool to help VGIN assess the Commonwealth’s current state of GIS as well as to help identify future needs. Questions or comments can be directed to VGIN or the ISP Regional Coordinators.
Complete survey results can be viewed here.
Some of the results have been mapped.
The 2010-2015 GIS Strategic Plan came out of extensive work with stakeholders and will guide VGIN over the next 5 years.
Base map data layers are data themes commonly used in a variety of applications. These include digital orthophotography, road centerlines (transportation), elevation, governmental units, cadastral and geodetic control.
Geospatial services include the forthcoming statewide metadata and data clearinghouse portal, hosted web mapping services and applications, and general geospatial needs and services counsel.
Activities include state agency user group meetings, regional user group meetings, metadata outreach and training, the GISVirginia blog, the VAMLIS LinkedIn group and VGIN community listservs.
