With the increasing importance of having more accurate land cover data at a local or regional level to support stormwater management, the Virginia General Assembly determined that it was important to provide funding for the development of land cover geospatial data. The General Assembly has charged the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and the Virginia Geographic Information Network (VGIN) to develop the data. Statewide land cover GIS data will support land use determinations at the local level and help ensure that state regulatory decisions impacting localities are using the most current and accurate sources of data. The data is based upon the VBMP 2011-2014 4 band orthophotography.
